Bird Watch this December

14/12/2015

What a contrast to last month!   While Ju is enjoying penguins in the Antarctic, Jan did the December count at low tide on a dry, still day and saw:

  • 123 Greylag Geese on the Barbreck fields. Intriguingly there was one goose amongst them which was the shape and size of a Greylag but which had a snow white neck and breast, grey head and black wings with white wingtips. Please send any suggestions as to what it might be to Jan!
  • 7 Canada Geese
  • 8 Curlews
  • 6 Shags
  • 52 Eider Duck – these were seen (and heard!) at various points from Kintraw to the southern end of the Lagoon
  • 9 Oyster Catcher
  • 9 Heron
  • 3 Goldeneye
  • 9 Mallard
  • 16 Red Breasted Mergansers
  • 36 Wigeon
  • 12 Teal
  • 1 Redshank
  • 3 Little Grebe
  • 2 Black Guillemot

There were also several seals about both in Craignish Lagoon and in Loch Beag.
